Gender and Sexual Preference

This is going to be a short post.  I would really like input from other people. I do apologize if I do not use the correct wording here – please correct me.

I understand that your identity and sexual preference are different.  You can identify as a male but your preference can be male, female, or bi. I have a bit of a hard time putting this together.  James dad is also having a hard time thinking about these two as different aspects of you as a person.

Any help would be appreciated…

I am a 47 year old female mom with 2 great sons. This is our story about a transgender child. I have lots to learn. I look forward to this adventure.

  1. Another way to think about it is that each are on a spectrum, which are totally independent from each other.

For gender, there’s mansculine man at one end, feminine woman at the other end, and space in between for other identities such as genderqueer and androgynous.

For sexual orientation, there’s straight at one end, and gay at the other end, and space in between for other identities such as bisexual and queer.

So, if someone is transitioning from female to male, and they are attracted to women only, they are straight; not a lesbian.

And if someone is transitioning from female to male, and they are attracted to men only, they are a gay man.

(There are many other combinations, of course, but you get the idea…)
